Why This Program Is Important for Young Learners:
We Must Start Young to Build Strong Readers
48% of Oregon 4th graders read below the “Basic” level, showing struggles with foundational reading skills.
Statewide reading proficiency remains about 10% below pre-pandemic levels, with the greatest impact on young learners.
Early access to books is one of the most effective ways to close literacy gaps. With 90% of brain development occurring before age 5, early access to books and language-rich environments is critical.
